Four ways to help minimize cyber crimes

A recent report by Symantec released on Feb 22nd has called out many BC cities for being the "riskiest" in regards to cyber crimes. Port Coquitlam, Vancouver, and Langley were highlighted in the reports as having the highest amount of bot attack, malware, and phishing. What does this mean to you, the users? And what should be take away front their report?

Here are the 4 great ways to help protect you online:
  1. Always connect to a secure internet connection.
Free WIFI always sounds like a great when travelling or out having coffee with your friends, but use them wisely. Try to refrain from doing online banking or other high security websites while away from home. Unless the WIFI connection you are using was setup securely, other users on the network may be able to skim information that passes through the wireless router. Always look for the encrypted logo when viewing these websites (it’s a little lock in the URL bar). Also, choose "public network" if you're using windows so all your sharing options are shut down!

  2. Keep your antivirus and internet security software up to date.
Make sure you have a reputable internet security package installed on your computer and that you keep it up to date. These typically need to be renewed once a year for most software packages. Since viruses are only one of many of types of attack, make sure you choose a solution with anti spam, firewall, browser protection and preferably backup.

  3. Use different passwords, and change them often. Having a simple password definitely makes life easier when logging into secure items but also makes it easier for people to guess them. Changing your passwords often will keep cyber criminals guessing. Malware is the most common way for criminals to gain access to your password, and it might not even be installed on your computer. You never know if your friend’s computer has had malware installed on it before.

  4. Use a password to unlock your mobile devices.
Everyone loves being connected to email, social networking, and other services online with their mobile devices. The problem with this convenience is in the wrong hands your information can be copied, stolen, or deleted. Always have some type of password or pin for your phone, tablet, and computer. This will give you extra protection in the event you misplace or have your device stolen.
